Louis Church was one of Frederic and Isabel Church’s four children who survived infancy. Louis’s older brother Frederic Joseph was reportedly a spendthrift, and constant source of trouble for his parents, Louis had another older brother, Theodore Winthrop, and a younger sister, Isabel Charlotte, nicknamed Downie. Beginning in 1891, Louis was entrusted with the farming at Olana, assisted by Thomas Cole’s son, Theodore. Upon his death in 1900, Frederic Church bequeathed Olana, including the farm and villa, to Louis. Louis married Sarah Baker Good in January 1901, and together they lived at Olana until 1943, when he died of a self-inflicted gun wound. The couple had no children.
